R U OK? Day | Learn What To Say | 10 Sep 2020

R U OK? Day

R U OK?’s vision is a world where we’re all connected and are protected from suicide.

They work to start conversations every day of the year, but R U OK? Day is the national day of action, on the second Thursday of September, dedicated to reminding people to regularly check in with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours.

R U OK? is encouraging everyone to meaningfully connect and support those not coping with life through conversation. Because we’ve all got what it takes to make a difference if we Ask, Listen, Encourage action and Check in.

The R U OK? mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

Their goals are to:

  1. Boost our confidence to meaningfully connect and ask about life’s ups and downs
  2. Nurture our sense of responsibility to regularly connect and support others
  3. Strengthen our sense of belonging because we know people are there for us
  4. Be relevant, strong and dynamic

R U OK? Day was founded by marketing executive Gavin Larkin (d. 2011) in 2009. Inspired by the suicide death of his father Barry Larkin, Gavin hoped to encourage more people to take time to reach out to anyone struggling with life.  Read more about his story here.

On the R U OK? website you will find conversation tips, resources and helpful information, plus you can download and share their free resources and materials to encourage everyone to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK.
