Take a Free Ride on the Driverless Vehicle at Glenelg
The City of Holdfast Bay at Glenelg is playing host to the world’s first integrated driverless technology trial. Matilda is a portable, connected transit hub that is equipped with the latest smart technologies and provides autonomous shuttle transportation.
This trial is the future potential link with established mass transit options in the Glenelg area, including the tram to and from the city and bus routes meaning that passengers can get from their homes to existing transportation no matter their abilities.
There are two autonomous vehicles on trial, Olli and Matilda. One is located outside the Stamford Grand and the other outside the Broadway Kiosk. They run along the Esplanade at Glenelg between Moseley Square and the Broadway Kiosk on weekdays only, with each trip taking roughly 10 minutes.
About Matilda
Matilda enables riders to source connecting tram timetables, book an Uber, locate the nearest bicycle station or schedule a ride on an autonomous shuttle. Matilda is designed to provide complete safety to it’s occupants and is equipped with 24/7 surveillance cameras, handrails, slip-resistant flooring, LED lighting and an emergency call button. Matilda is able to facilitate wheelchair users and those with vision, hearing, physical and cognitive impairments via the use of smart technology.
Purpose of the trial
Many people don’t have the ability to get to public transport with ease. Olli and Matilda are equipped with technologies to get everyone from their homes to existing transport, and back again – also known as ‘First Mile-Last Mile transport’.
