The Giant Christmas Tree in Adelaide’s Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga.

The City of Adelaide’s Christmas Tree Lighting Event takes place in the heart of the city on Saturday 9 November 2024 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. This wonderful, free community gathering, leading up to the magical moment when the giant Christmas tree lights up the night sky around 8:45 pm.

Led by Cosi, the crowd will be entertained by headline act Charmaine Jones and Gospo before the Lord Mayor and a local primary school student officially light the tree. There will be food trucks to choose delicious bites from, so be sure to bring your own picnic blankets for a cozy spot to soak in all the festive food and fun.

Visit the Giant Christmas Tree

Soaring 25 metres into the sky, this beautiful Christmas tree towers over Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga each year and lights up nightly until the end of the festive season as part of the City of Adelaide’s Christmas Festival. 

Going to see the giant Christmas tree is the city is a fabulous outing with the kids and it’s also completely FREE to visit. You can take a picnic or grab some food from the Adelaide Central Market or Gouger Street and admire the lights while sitting in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga. If it’s a warm night, the kids will love having a splash in the Victoria Square fountains too! The fountains are switched on every night unless an event is scheduled in the square.

This magnificent Christmas tree is covered in more than 13,616 individually programmed twinkling LED lights and features a light display which runs for approximately 10 minutes. 

The Giant Christmas Tree lights up nightly switching on at 8.30pm and running until 2.30am.

Music at the Tree

Celebrate the countdown to Christmas with Music at the Tree at Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga. From December 19-24, enjoy a week of live music by talented local musicians each night, before the nightly lighting of the iconic giant Christmas Tree at 8:30 pm. Visit the heart of Adelaide for performances that bring the true spirit of the season to life.

There are also some pop-up water fountains in front of the Christmas Tree, so it’s a good idea to wear bathers or take a change of clothes and towel if your kids can’t resist running through the water (which is most kids!).


 

The tree is also worth visiting during the day if you have little ones who are usually asleep by 8.00pm.
