Tom & Jerry The Movie (2021) | Review
Classic madcap fun with a fresh twist.
Review by Sharon Harrington
Tom & Jerry are back with the same animated appearance and anarchistic spirit as when they first appeared in the 1940s, complete with over the top slapstick battles, silent pantomime, and Jerry, the cunning mouse, outwitting Tom, the hapless cat, at every turn. However, this time around the movie is set in the live-action world in a similar format to movies such as Space Jam and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
The quarrelsome duo’s animated storyline intertwines with the live action plot of down on her luck Kayla who has just moved to New York to make her mark in life and manages to bluff her way into a job in a high-end hotel with no education or experience. When Jerry moves into the hotel, Tom is hired by Kayla to eradicate him before he can ruin the upcoming society wedding being hosted by the hotel. From this premise, escalating mayhem and destruction follows much to the delight of the children in the audience.
The casting team has put together an appealing line up of comedic and dramatic talent. Kick Ass’ Chloë Grace Moretz adds class to the proceedings as the quick-witted, street-smart Kayla who has a heart of gold. Those who have seen the BBC’s Catastrophe will enjoy Rob Delany’s turn as the humorous and unexpectedly sentimental Hotel General Manager, Mr Dubros. The Hangover’s Ken Jeong delivers his special brand of zany craziness as Chef Jackie who is driven to insanity by the antics of Tom & Jerry. Michael Peña is also amusing as the vengeful Events Manager, Terence Mendoza, who is determined to destroy Kayla’s career.
I found this film to be simple and fun much like a formulaic romantic comedy that has been spliced with the cartoon silliness of Tom and Jerry. It also has some nice messages for the kids on relationships and working together as a team. The kids in the theatre laughed out loud whenever Tom and Jerry appeared on screen and had a great time watching this movie.
If you are seeking a lighthearted family movie with a likeable cast, this could be the movie for you.
