Inneston Lake in Dhilba Guuranda, South Australia
Innes National Park’s own little blue lake is a beautiful spot to visit.
There are a few lakes in the national park but this little salt lake is the only one that’s a stunning blue green colour. We initially didn’t know it was a salt lake, but a quick taste confirmed it is very salty! While there are amazing beaches in the National Park to swim at, this is another place you can take a dip in Summer while in the Yorke Peninsula.
The lake sits right by the ruins of the little historical gypsum mining town of Inneston which once supported a community of miners, shopkeepers and their families. These days it’s a ghost town except for 7 renovated heritage lodges which you can stay in.
The town is a nice pit stop to spot emus, kangaroos, Tammar wallabies and Malleefowl.
The Inneston Lake is also where stromatolites grow. They’re very rare marine growths similar to coral built by algae and sediment.
The Inneston Historic Walk starting from the Inneston car park is a four kilometre return walking trail taking approximately two hours. It is advised that visitors be cautious around the unstable ruins and make sure to carry enough water.
If you visit after there’s been enough rain you can try for a ‘walking on water’ photo by walking along the pathway in between the two parts of the lake.
The Inneston Lake can be reached by a short walk from the car park (about 100 metres) at the start of the Inneston Historic Walk, or just by the main road when you see the Inneston Lake sign. Just look out for the gorgeous blue coloured lake through the gaps of the bushes.

It’s approximately 368km out of Adelaide (about 4 hours and 22 minutes).
