Elysian Fields | Jetty Road Glenelg

Colourful stained glass flowers have bloomed along Jetty Road in Glenelg.

Created by Melbourne-based art and science collective Skunk Control, Glenelg’s new landmark on Jetty Road is an ‘art-meets-science installation’ designed to welcome you to stop, look up and feel a sense of wonder.

Standing at the Brighton Road entrance to Jetty Road alongside the Telstra building, the avenue of towering flowers is 21 metres long.  There are a total of 20 colourful flowers, some of which stand atop 5-metre-high stems and stretch up to 2.7 metres in length.

Nick Athanasiou, founder of Skunk Control, says

“I like the idea of people stepping in, stopping and trying to figure out how it’s all working … and then taking a step forward but stopping again to pause…I like the idea of that pause.”

Approximately 200 school students from three Holdfast Bay schools were involved in workshops with Nick, where they learned about the science of light and created their own mini flower sculptures – one of which inspired some of the colour configurations in the entry statement flowers.

Installed in September 2025, the flowers reflect light in the most interesting ways, including colourful shadows on the new footpaths.  The beauty of Elysian Fields is that your experience of it will change depending on the time of day and time of year you see it.  The petals come to life as the sun shines through the panels – each petal contains layers of stainless steel, inlaid with optical filters – some of which display different colours when viewed from different angles. It will also be lit up at night, providing another immersive experience.

You can view the installation at the top of Jetty Road – if travelling by tram from the city you can hop off at stop 15 and cross over and the lights on Brighton Road.

NOTE: Major construction works are currently underway along Jetty Road and have been accelerated to align with the State Government’s temporary closure of the Glenelg tramline as part of its Tram Grade Separation projects.  The tramline to Glenelg is due to reopen in late January 2026.
