An accidental pause.
I was meant to meet the real estate agent at my mother-law and late father-in-law’s house to hand over the keys to the new owners. I had just got a new phone a couple of days before and in a rush to leave the house, I grabbed my old one by mistake.

When the agent hadn’t arrived, I wandered out into the backyard. Sitting in the warm sun on the patio bricks I looked across the garden that they established after they moved in 23 years ago. Right in front of me was the gently curved brick path that my mother-in-law had always wanted. I remember how she specifically wanted it to be curved. My father-in-law had carefully paved it himself all those years ago. Sitting there, I found myself thinking of them both. He passed away 17 years ago.

Then, in the middle of those thoughts, something landed softly on my chest.
Instinctively, I went to shoo it away, but when I looked down, there was a tiny ladybird sitting right over my heart. It stayed there for a little while, long enough for me to take a quick (terrible) photo. It felt strangely peaceful, almost surreal.

Eventually, I went next door to borrow the neighbour’s phone so I could call the real estate agent. That’s when we discovered the mix-up. He’d been waiting at his office, thinking we were meeting there, while I’d been waiting at the house.

If I’d picked up the right phone that morning, I would have received the call from the agent wondering where I was. There would have been no quiet time in the garden. No chance to sit and ponder with the memories. No unexpected visitor resting over my heart.

Maybe it was simply coincidence.
Maybe it was serendipity.
Whatever it was, I’m grateful for that accidental pause before saying a final goodbye to a place that holds family memories.

As someone who rarely stops, and is always rushing around doing something, I could have been really annoyed about ‘wasting’ 45 minutes waiting around, but this was a reminder that not every interruption is an inconvenience.
Quiet pauses are good for the soul.
And sometimes it’s just meant to be.

HEXADECA is a FREE and interactive music-making installation, and it`s popping up in Moseley Square, Glenelg from 10 - 26 July!

Take a seat, go for a spin, and you`ll trigger part of the music. Each of the 16 seats plays a different section of the soundtrack, so as more people jump on and start spinning, the music gradually builds into a complete piece. Add in the lights and movement, and it becomes a really cool interactive experience.

Best of all - everyone can have a turn!
