Inclusive Playgrounds in Adelaide
South Australia’s councils and community organisations are creating more inclusive playgrounds so that children of all abilities can experience the joy of outdoor play.
Equipment that caters for a range of disabilities and disorders may include flying fox harnesses, wheelchair-accessible ramps and merry-go-rounds, in-ground wheelchair-friendly trampolines, sensory equipment and wheelchair-friendly swings.
Thorndon Park Playground is our favourite inclusive playground as it ticks the boxes with its accessible winding paths, flying fox harness, accessible trampolines and an accessible merry go round carousel. Fremont Playground also has several good accessible playground features plus a full size disabled toilet, which includes a changing place for those who cannot use a standard accessible toilet. While Rymill Park Quentin Kenihan Inclusive Playground has several additional accessible features including a sway swing that rocks, a sound and sensory garden, musical instruments plus a water pump and button presser for fountains, that are at the height a wheelchair user can access.
In comparison, many other playgrounds may have only one or two pieces of accessible equipment.
Read about the playgrounds below to find out which equipment they have.
