Top Family Fun Things to do in Adelaide this Summer
Summer’s long hot days and relaxed vibes offer the perfect opportunity to get out as a family and explore our beaches, catch up with friends at a park or playground and indulge in ice cream. We’ve included some of our favourite places to visit around Adelaide plus a few different ideas for things to do with your kids.
Christmas Family Fun
No snowy Christmases here in Oz! Our hot summer days and long nights also means Christmas in Australia and we love taking even just a bit of time out amidst the busyness of Christmas prep to spend precious time with the kids visiting Father Christmas, seeing all the lovely lights around Adelaide’s streets and watching the Giant Christmas Tree in the city. Spend a Day at the Beach
Did you know that if you only go to the beach once every year in your child’s life, that’s only about 17 visits! So, take a day off everything if you can and spend the day lazing around at the beach. Enjoy a change of scenery and explore one of SA’s beautiful country regions. The Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills are an easy drive away. Enjoy a long lunch at a family friendly winery or cafe, stop at a playground, go for a bike ride, visit a chocolate shop or wildlife park.
Another idea for a great day trip is a visit to Glenelg. Catch the tram from Adelaide to Glenelg and go swimming, wander along the beach, sample food from one of the many eateries in the area or visit the Beachhouse for family fun.

Family Friendly Wineries
There’s no shortage of wineries in SA, so make a date with friends and enjoy a long lazy lunch, platter or picnic while sipping wine and watching the kids play. There are plenty within 20 – 40 minutes of the City of Adelaide or you can make a day of it and head further afield to one of our wine regions. Read more here
Carrick Hill and the Storybook Trail
This is one of our favourite destinations with something for everyone to appreciate – scenic views, beautiful gardens to meander and the delightful Storybook Trail, complete with a hobbit house, cubby houses to play in and plenty of book characters to discover – a great adventure for the kids. Visit a Water Park or Pool
Experience a refreshing dip at your local pool or add some action into the mix at a water park with water slides and interactive splash ground. Read more here
Morialta Conservation Park & Nature Playground
Morialta Conservation Park is great for young families – the walk to the First Falls is pretty flat and ok to do with a pram. Explore the creeks and look out for plenty of wildlife – we love to do some koala spotting and counting how many we see. Make sure you also stop at the amazing nature playround. Read our review here
Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens
Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is beautiful in every season. During Summer, on a hot day, it can be up to 7 degrees cooler and is the ideal time to explore the garden’s cooler areas like the rainforest gully. Remember to take a picnic lunch. Read our review here
Pick Your Own Strawberries – Beerenberg
If you love the taste of freshly picked strawberries make sure you visit Beerenberg in the Adelaide Hills for a fabulous day out with the family, strolling through the strawberry patch amongst rows of juicy berries to pick and take home. While you’re visiting, be sure to stop at Beerenberg’s brand new cafe and shopping experience. Find out more here

Visit one of SA’s Reservoirs
Some of South Australia’s reservoirs are now much more accessible and feature scenic walking and cycling trails, or access for kayaking and fishing. Other reservoirs offer amazing views and picnic areas. Read about SA’s Reservoirs here.
Spend a day in the City of Adelaide
There really is a lot to see and do in the city – visit the Art Gallery, or a museum, find a park or playground, wander along the banks of the River Torrens. Take a Train Ride
Whether you just love trainspotting, or you’re looking to ride a train, you can find out all you need to know about miniature train rides, seasonal train rides and train-themed playgrounds here.
Go for a Walk
Summer is a great time to get out and explore and we have fantastic walks all around SA. For something different, try an invigorating early morning walk while everything is quiet and still or head out after dinner to watch the birds enjoying the cool of the evening at dusk.
