Best Places to visit in the Adelaide Hills

If you like rolling hills, bushland, quiet country roads, bushwalks, good food and wine, fresh air, cooler temps and escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, then head to the Adelaide Hills for a day trip. It’s only a 20 minute drive from the City of Adelaide and there are so many different districts within the hills offering changing scenery, wine, food and fun activities.

Fun things to do and see with kids

Strawberry Picking

From November to April every year, Beerenberg opens it’s strawberry patch for picking. This is a lovely activity to do with family and friends. Read our review here.

Apple Picking

During May, apple orchards in the Adelaide Hills open their gates to the public for apple picking. Some orchards also sell food and drink. The township of Balhannah has two wonderful apple stalls open year round (Applefields Orchard Shop and The Olde Apple Shed). Both are located on the main thoroughfare through town, so be sure to pop in for some local produce!

Cherry Picking

Pick your own or simply purchase delicious cherries from a growing number of orchards throughout the Adelaide Hills from November to January every year. Click here for more info. 

Hahndorf Farm Barn

The Hahndorf Farm Barn is located just out of Hahndorf. Kids can get up close to baby farm animals, feed the animals, enjoy pony rides, tractor rides and play in the giant sandpit. Read our review

Woodhouse Activity Centre

Set on over 50 acres of land at Piccadilly with physical challenges for all ages including climbing wall, maze, tube slides and more. Find out more here

Cleland Wildlife Park

Immerse yourself in Australia’s native wildlife at Cleland, only 20 mins from the city at Crafers. Make sure you allow at least 2 hours to wander around the park to view the native animals and birds. You can also hand feed some of the animals or enjoy get up close and personal with a wildlife experience. Read our review


Four Oaks Farm

Visit this scenic farm at Littlehampton and enjoy pony rides, trips on the fire engine, feed the farm animals and more. Find out more here

Gorge Rd Wildlife Park

A family friendly place to learn about, enjoy and experience a variety of animals housed on 14 acres of land. Read our review

National Motor Museum

The museum, in Birdwood, houses a huge collection of automobiles including vintage cars, trucks, motorbikes and even a Bugatti Veyron. This is a really interesting museum for all ages with fun activities and interactive stations along the way for the kids. Find out more here

Big Rocking Horse

Climb the stairs and enjoy the view from the world’s biggest rocking horse at Gumeracha. There’s a fantastic toy factory full of wooden toys plus a small wildlife park where kids can feed the animals. Read our review

Melba’s Chocolates 

Located at Woodside, visitors can watch chocolate being made and also purchase chocolate and confectionery from the factory shop. Food and refreshments are also available. Click here for more info.

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden

The sprawling Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is the perfect place to stop for a picnic. During Autumn, the trees are absolutely glorious in shades of yellow, orange and red. During Winter, the creeks are flowing while during Spring, the azaleas and other Spring flowering trees are magnificent. The trees and lake provide a cool haven in Summer. Read our review

Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary

Childs Rd tunnel at Littlehampton | if you find yourself driving through Littlehampton, take the short detour to the end of Childs Road and wander through the incredible tunnel painted by Hills artist Wendy Dixon Whiley. The pedestrian tunnel runs underneath the South Eastern Freeway and will be sure to impress!
